What Is The Purpose Of A Concrete Footer?

What are  Concrete Footings?

When you build a house, the foundation is the first and most important part of it. The foundations are laid, and they are responsible for handling the weight of the structure above them. The bases themselves are usually made of concrete, although they can also be found in the variations of brickwork and masonry. They are designed to distribute the weight of the building across the area and to stop the weight of the structure from sinking to the ground.

Purpose of Concrete Footing

Footings are an important part of the construction of the foundation. Typically, they are made of concrete with rebar reinforcement that has been poured into an excavated trench. The aim of the foundations is to support the foundation and prevent settlement. Footing is particularly important in areas with troubled soils.

The construction of the base is best left to the pros who can evaluate the soil conditions and decide on the proper depth and width of the base as well as the proper positioning. The dimensions of the bases also depend on the size and type of the structure to be constructed. The placement of the foundations is crucial in order to provide proper support for the foundation and, ultimately, for the structure.

How do they work?

There are a number of different types of concrete bases: concrete base under a single column, concrete base under multiple columns and concrete wall base. Usually, for a ‘ordinary’ home built on typical soil, a 16 or 20 inch wide base is sufficient for load bearing purposes.

Concrete spread under one column: usually the column is in the middle of the base. The spread base distributes the weight to the ground below, and the bottom of the base acts as a shield against bending created by the strength of the column and the resistance of the earth.

Concrete spreads under multiple columns: for these bases, rebars are often required at the top and bottom of the spreadsheets with multiple columns.Concrete wall sockets: this socket is attached to the wall above, with the socket distributing weight from the wall through the earth.

Problems can arise if a house is built on certain types of soil, such as soft clay soil. The base itself can hold the weight of the house in good soil, but when it is laid on soft clay soil, it can fight. If this happens, an excessive settlement can be seen. Settlement is, in this context, a distortion of the building due to unequal foundations. It may be quite common for settlement to occur once a home has been built, but uneven or ‘differential’ settlement can cause serious problems.

The construction of the footings is best left to the pros who can evaluate the soil conditions and decide on the proper depth and width of the base as well as the proper positioning. The dimensions of the bases also depend on the size and type of the structure to be constructed. The placement of the foundations is crucial in order to provide proper support for the foundation and, ultimately, for the structure.
