It is bordered by Claremont Avenue to the north, College Avenue to the south, Ashby Avenue to the west, and Adeline Street to the east. The area was originally part of Rancho San Pablo, a Mexican land grant given to Don Vicente Peralta in 1820. The rancho eventually became part of Contra Costa County when California became a state in 1850.

In 1877, John T. Doyle purchased a portion of the rancho and began subdividing it into smaller parcels. The first streets were laid out in 1880, and development slowly began to occur over the next several decades. By 1900, there were a few dozen homes in the area, and a school had been built.
