Danville is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is located in the San Ramon Valley and had a population of 42,039 in 2019. Danville was ranked as the 4th wealthiest city with a population of 40,000 or more in the 2010-2014 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.

 

In 1856 James Danforth and his wife Eliza bought 600 acres (2.4 km2) of land from Hiram Brown (after whom Brownsville was named), intending to build a home on it. They later acquired 400 acres (1.6 km2) formerly part of Rancho San Ramon and another 150 acres (0.61 km2) from Benjamin O’Farrel. They then moved to Blackhawk, where they ran a hotel called “Danforth’s Blackhawk Hotel”. James Danforth built a sawmill and began selling lumber, coal, wheat, and hay. Eventually, the town was named after him.
