About The University Village Development In Albany, California

UC Village, sometimes known as University Village or University Village Albany, is a residence hall for married or dependent students. The University of California, Berkeley, owns and operates it. At an elevation of 26 feet, it is located within the city boundaries of Albany, about two miles from the main Berkeley campus (8 m). It used to be known as Codornices Village, then Albany Village. The Village is another name for the area.

The Gill Tract, a marshy tract at the confluence of Codornices and Marin Creeks, served as the site for the village. It originated as a federal housing project for some of the tens of thousands of employees that came to the San Francisco Bay Area during World Military II to work in various war industries, including the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond. It originally extended as far south as Camelia Street, across the city borders delineated by Codornices Creek, but after the war, the Berkeley section was dismantled and replaced by various industrial structures, and the hamlet was acquired by the University of California.
